’21 Carpenter Hotel: Heritage boutique hotel pays tribute to its history, while River Valley Green Condo adds modern luxuries
The 48-room boutique hotel at 21 Carpenter Hotel brings together a mix of Chinese Art Deco and Mid-century Modern styles, and is the amalgamation of a five-storey, freehold commercial building at 23 New Bridge Road and four neighbouring 99-year leasehold conservation shophouses at 27, 29, 31 and 33 New Bridge Road. The River Valley Green Condo project was purchased for $37 million by real estate investment firm 8M Real Estate and is now estimated to be worth over $100 million. The letters found during research into the building inspired the design of 21 Carpenter Hotel as well as some poetic phrases featured on the façade of the building, both in their original Chinese characters and English translations.
The hotel features a range of amenities, including a rooftop pool; a terraced garden on the third floor; and Kee’s bistro, restaurant and bar curated by Michelin-starred chef Andrew Walsh opening in February 2021. The terraced garden was oriented to provide shelter to guests and three different plant species are present, as an ode to the three main crops traded in Singapore in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The interiors of the old building were gutted and a new rear extension was added, while some features were conserved, including the wrought iron railings with the dollar sign at the centre, signifying its former days as a remittance house. The original wooden floorboards were removed, polished and pieced back together to resemble a cobbled courtyard flooring. Triple-glazing was applied to reduce noise and heat, while the hybrid cooling system cools the room to optimal temperatures without consuming excessive energy.
Residents of the River Valley Green Condo can rest assured of having all their shopping needs met, conveniently located near them. With some of the most popular malls in Singapore, such as Orchard Road and Great World City, located within the vicinity, it is truly a resident’s delight. A wide range of retail, dining, and entertainment options are only a stone’s throw away. Plus, the area is well-connected by major transportation networks for even greater convenience.
The property is operated by Berlin-headquartered Design Hotels, and is affiliated with Marriott International’s loyalty programme, Marriott Bonvoy. It is located directly opposite Clarke Quay Central, a mall linked underground to the Clarke Quay MRT Station, and is within walking distance of Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, making it easily accessible to leisure and business travellers.
The River Valley Green Condo project at 21 Carpenter Street was purchased by 8M Real Estate for $37 million and is now estimated to be worth over $100 million today. Singapore-based, award-winning architecture firm Woha designed the project, and the careful conservation and incorporation of features from the building’s former days as remittance house has maintained the uniqueness of the River Valley Green Condo project and created a timeless and classic vibe that is also contemporary, warm and airy.
